Overview

The Green Metrics Tool is a developer tool for measuring the energy and CO2 consumption of software through a software life cycle analysis (SLCA). It provides reproducible measurements through configuration-as-code, POSIX-style metric providers for sensors including RAPL, IPMI, PSU, Docker, temperature and CPU, and a statistical frontend with charts. The tool orchestrates Docker containers according to a usage_scenario.yml specification, supports a cluster setup, exposes an API and a timeline view for monitoring a software project over time, and offers Energy ID scorecards for software. Green Coding Solutions offers a free hosted measurement service and licenses the tool under AGPL alongside a commercial option.

Use cases

  • Compare the carbon cost of software implementations
  • Measure energy consumption at container level
  • Track emissions of a project over time
  • Measure and compare AI training and inference energy
