Solar asset monitoring tools for operating PV fleets

How owners and asset managers should evaluate monitoring and analytics for operating PV plants, from meter data to performance loss.

Once a photovoltaic plant is operating, the questions shift from design yield to evidence: is the plant delivering the performance ratio and availability it was financed on, which losses are recoverable, and can the owner prove either to a lender, an insurer or an offtaker. Asset owners, O&M contractors, technical advisers and investment managers are the buyers, and they are usually managing fleets built by different EPC contractors with different inverters, sensors and SCADA systems.

The data is messier than in design. Inverter and SCADA telemetry, revenue meters, irradiance sensors or reference cells, module and ambient temperature, soiling stations, grid curtailment signals and maintenance logs all arrive at different intervals and with different clocks. Communications outages create gaps, sensors drift or fail, and a plant with no irradiance measurement cannot compute a credible performance ratio without a modelled substitute. Portfolio reporting then depends on normalising all of this across sites and commissioning years.

Most monitoring failures are definitional rather than technical. Performance ratio is calculated with a different irradiance source or availability adjustment at each site, curtailment is counted as underperformance, soiling and degradation are conflated, alarm thresholds generate noise that operators learn to ignore, and the owner cannot export raw data when changing vendors.

Evaluate tools on documented performance definitions, ingestion coverage, loss breakdown, alarm quality and data ownership. The directory is still expanding its coverage of PV asset and O&M tooling; the entries listed here are the closest energy and carbon measurement tools available today, not substitutes for plant-specific monitoring systems.

What to evaluate

  1. 01

    Performance ratio definition and inputs

Ask for the exact PR formula, the irradiance source and temperature correction, how availability is treated, and which periods are excluded for curtailment or outages, applied consistently across the fleet.

  2. 02

    Data ingestion and gap handling

Confirm supported inverter, SCADA and meter interfaces, interval resolution, clock synchronisation, how gaps are flagged and estimated, and whether raw telemetry is retained for later analysis.

  3. 03

    Loss breakdown and attribution

The tool should separate soiling, shading, degradation, curtailment, availability and clipping, state the method behind each estimate, and show the confidence or range rather than a single unexplained percentage.

  4. 04

    Alarm quality and O&M workflow

Check how thresholds are set against site baselines, how duplicate and nuisance alarms are suppressed, whether alarms create work orders, and whether response and repair times can be reported.

  5. 05

    Portfolio benchmarking

Compare sites after normalising for resource, technology, mounting and commissioning year, flag outliers with the evidence behind them, and avoid ranking plants on raw yield alone.

  6. 06

    Data ownership and export

Require API or bulk export of raw and derived data, documented retention, and contract terms that let the owner take historical data without paying for a migration when changing providers.
