AI Energy Monitoring

Green Algorithms

Carbon footprint calculators and HPC energy dashboards for computational science.

Verified 2026-10-22

Overview

The Green Algorithms Initiative, a project of the Cambridge Sustainable Computing Lab, provides tools for estimating the carbon footprint of computational science. Its online calculator estimates the carbon footprint of a computation, a dashboard monitors the energy usage and carbon footprint of HPC use, and GA4HPC offers a minimalist single-user version that needs no admin access. The initiative also runs E-SCOUT, a study evaluating whether carbon reporting tools change behaviour, and publishes guidance for citing and reporting carbon footprints in research.

Use cases

  • Estimate the carbon footprint of a computation
  • Monitor HPC energy use and emissions
  • Report carbon footprints in research
  • Track the sustainability of scientific computing
